Jerome Iginla of the Calgary Flames has voluntarily withdrawn from the All Star festivities in Raleigh. In what would have been his sixth appearance at the event, he cites the illness of his grandmother as the reason he will not be attending. So far, this season , Iginla has 19 goals, 23 assists, and a +/- -10. Surely, his numbers are All-Star worthy, but now, that vacant position has been taken over by Danny Briere of the Philadelphia Flyers.
Briere, according to stats, is a better option for the All-Star game than Iginla. He currently leads the Flyers in points with 24 goals and 17 assists.(1 point behind another Flyers All-Star, Claude Giroux). The numbers obviously speak for themselves and Briere is ecstatic to bring another Flyer to the roster. It’s unclear if they’ll be playing together though. That will all be sorted out on January 28th, when captains Eric Staal and Nicklas Lindstrom select the 21 players for their team in the fanstasy draft.
