While the Thrashers ARE the number one hockey team in the metro area, there are a few other teams worth reading up on around here. One of the easiest to over look – the Gwinnett Gladiators.
Located in Duluth, GA, the ECHL Gwinnett Gladiators are a few steps closer to home that the AHL team, the Chicago Wolves. In Atlanta since 2003, the Gladiators were originally the Mobile Mysticks until they moved from Mobile, AL to Duluth, GA. Since being in GA, this team has made playoff appearances 6 times so far and were in the 2006 Kelly Cup Finals.
After the beginning of what could have been an amazing season this year for the Gwinnett Gladiators, this article explains, not only why the callups killed their playoff chances, but why the AHL and, ultimately, the NHL should be grateful for such a man in charge of their farm team like Jeff Pyle.
While I have not yet been to a Gladiators game, this will be changing with the upcoming season. I have friends who cannot stop raving about the Gladiator games and we plan on making our kids more diverse in the Atlanta area hockey. Recently, Stadium Journey, who publishes reviews of pro and college sports stadiums, reviewed the Gladiators home here reminding me again that we need to hit the Gwinnett area games.
Look for a new category in the upcoming months covering more local teams, starting with the Gwinnett Gladiators!
