Winnipeg traded up to grab Brennan Serville, a defenseman playing for Stouffville of the OJHL. His OHL rights are owned by Sudbury, but he missed their training camp with a broken collarbone. In fact, Serville has had quite a few bouts with injuries, which is why he was ranked relatively low in the draft.
Instead of playing in the OHL, he will play for the University of Michigan this fall. With Wolverine defenseman Brandon Burlon leaving for the pro ranks, Serville will likely get quite a bit of ice time as a Freshman (though I would expect him to begin on their third pair).
Serville had 33 points (3 G) in 36 games this year in the OJHL. At 6’3″ 180 lbs he has some filling out to do, and will likely do so in Ann Arbor. He’s been described as having a simple yet effective game, but he has reasonable offensive upside as well.
note: I’ll be out of town and without internet from now until the end of the draft, so I’ll have a draft wrapup tomorrow night.
