The Jets got goals from Shayne Wiebe and Mark Scheifele and Edward Pasquale and Chris Carrozzi combined to pitch a shutout as the Jets won their finale over the Canucks to finish 2-1 in their three games.
Overall, I thought the Jets showed pretty well. They still have some obvious holes in their system but they have a lot to look forward to as well. First, Edward Pasquale’s stock got a huge boost as he didn’t allow a goal over the course of the tournament. He looked calm and composed in net and probably will get the call if either Pavelec or Mason gets hurt.
Up front, the Jason Gregoire signing is paying dividends as well. He was one of the oldest guys on the team, but he looked great in the three games, and was able to dominate with or without the puck. I think he has a shot to crack the NHL roster to start the year, but even if he needs some AHL seasoning he should end up a very good pro.
Speaking of, Mark Scheifele showed glimpses as to why the Jets went off the board a bit to take him 7th overall. He will always have the skating concerns over his head, but he is smart, has a great shot, and is actually pretty shifty compared to what I thought he would be given his skating concerns. He has great hands as well, and looks like a guy who can both rack up assists and goals.
Defensively, Zach Redmond looked great (as he should given his age). He’ll probably start in the AHL, but could end up a nice 2nd pair defenseman who can play on the power play as well.
I also thought Julian Melchiori played well in his three games, showing off some good hands (especially defensively) and some solid positioning.
