The St. John’s IceCaps won their first round series of the Calder Cup playoffs tonight, knocking off the Syracuse Crunch in a sweep. The IceCaps, who are the 2 seed in the Eastern Conference, will begin their second round series on Tuesday. The opponent is pending completion of other first round series.

Derek Meech, who played 2 games with the Jets, scored the game winner in overtime, and was one of four different IceCaps who scored goals. Carl Klingberg, Raymond Sawada, and John Albert, who had 2 goals in the series after just 9 all season, had the others.

Also of note, 2011 first rounder Mark Scheifele had his first career AHL point with an assist.
