Winnipeg Jets forward Anthony Peluso has been suspended 3 games for his hit on Dallas Stars defenceman Alex Goligoski. Peluso has no prior incidents in the NHL.
I understand what Peluso was trying to do as the Stars were getting really physical against Mark Scheifele and others during the game, but his adrenaline took over and he went for the hit which resulted in the penalty. The last time the Jets scored to tie the game up, the Stars answered back 48 seconds after Blake Wheeler tied it up 2-2. Wheeler answered again to tie the game up only 1 minute and 7 seconds after Jamie Benn’s goal and because the Jets seemed to relax after tying it up, Peluso and the rest of the Jets wanted to keep going after the goal: What better way than with a big hit?
The Jets had just scored to tie the game up 3-3 and had the momentum when Peluso targeted Goligoski and sent him off the ice with a cut above his eye with the hit from behind. The Stars scored 2 powerplay goals on the 5 minute major and the Jets never got back into the game after that.
This team is real close to turning losses into wins and plays like these will slowly go by the wayside once they gain the experience playing in this league. You look back at the Jets losses and it’s always a small mistake, a quick reaction in a heated game and they get scored on and then they have to fight to get back into the game.
I’m encouraged, although frustrated with how things are going and although they have dug themselves a huge hole to make the playoffs, there is a lot of hockey left this year and anything can happen when you gain experience and confidence.
Peluso will be eligible for return on December 22nd when the Jets visit the Vancouver Canucks.
